This course examines how Augustine views the natural psychological movements and powers involved in the soul’s ascent to God. Readings include certain of Augustine's early dialogues, De doctrina Christiana, and the latter half of De Trinitate. While the focus is on Augustine’s account, students will encounter various positions from the philosophical schools of late antiquity (NeoPlatonic, Stoic, Epicurean, Skeptic).
