I. Temporary Medical Conditions

Temporary Medical Conditions

The University recognizes that students may experience temporary medical conditions that affect their ability to attend classes, complete coursework, or participate in University activities. Examples of temporary medical conditions may include:

  • injuries,
  • surgeries,
  • concussions,
  • acute illnesses,
  • temporary mobility limitations, or
  • other short-term medical conditions.

Students experiencing a temporary medical condition are encouraged to notify the Dean of Students Office as soon as possible. The Dean of Students Office may assist students by coordinating temporary academic support and communicating with faculty regarding the student's circumstances.

Students may submit a request for temporary medical support through the Dean of Students Office using the Emergency Support and Accommodation Request Form:

Emergency Support and Accommodation Request

Requests are reviewed on an individualized basis and may require documentation from a qualified healthcare provider describing the nature of the condition, expected duration, and any recommended restrictions or support measures.

Depending on the circumstances, support may include:

  • notification of faculty regarding temporary medical circumstances,
  • temporary flexibility related to attendance or coursework,
  • coordination with campus resources, or
  • referral to other University offices for additional support.

Students whose medical condition is expected to be long-term, recurring, or substantially limiting may be eligible for accommodations through the Office of Access and Disability Services (ADS). Students seeking disability-related accommodations should contact ADS to begin the accommodation request process.

Students experiencing pregnancy, childbirth, lactation, or related medical conditions should refer to the Pregnancy and Parenting Adjustments section of this handbook. Pregnancy-related adjustments are coordinated through the Title IX Coordinator.
