These three saints of sixteenth-century Spain are among the most influential spiritual teachers of the Catholic tradition. This course introduces the lives, works, and a few key doctrines of these saints: Ignatius of Loyola on the discernment of spirits and rules for making faith-based decisions; Teresa of Avila on the stages of contemplative prayer; and John of the Cross on the active and passive purifications (or “nights”) which are necessary for our spiritual growth.
