Lecture
This course provides an interdisciplinary introduction to semiconductor engineering, with emphasis on the fundamentals, materials, manufacturing processes, equipment, applications, and career opportunities within the semiconductor industry. Students will develop a broad understanding of the semiconductor value chain, from quartz and silicon production through wafer manufacturing, device fabrication, packaging, testing, and emerging semiconductor technologies. The course introduces fundamental concepts in semiconductor materials and devices, vacuum systems, crystal growth, purification, doping, thin-film deposition, physical vapor deposition (PVD), chemical vapor deposition (CVD), lithography, etching, oxidation, metallization, packaging, and testing. The course also examines the global semiconductor industry and the growing semiconductor ecosystem in the United States and Texas.
