F. Housing Accommodations

Housing Accommodations

The University is committed to providing equal access to University housing for students with disabilities through reasonable housing accommodations coordinated by the Office of Access and Disability Services (ADS).

Housing accommodations are intended to provide students with disabilities equitable access to the residential experience and are evaluated through an individualized interactive process in accordance with applicable federal and state laws and University policies.

Requesting Housing Accommodations

Students requesting disability-related housing accommodations must complete the accommodation request process through the Office of Access and Disability Servies Accommodation Request Process and provide appropriate supporting documentation when requested.

Request accommodations in the AIM Student Portal

Housing accommodation requests should be submitted as early as possible to allow adequate time for review and coordination with Residential Life and other campus offices. ADS recommends submitting requests four weeks before the start of the semester.  Requests submitted after established housing deadlines may limit the University’s ability to implement certain accommodations immediately.

Documentation will be requested to support:

  • the presence of a disability,
  • functional limitations related to the disability, and
  • the relationship between the requested housing accommodation and the student’s disability-related needs.

The University engages in an individualized review process and may request additional information when necessary to evaluate a request.

Types of Housing Accommodations

Housing accommodations are determined on an individualized basis depending on disability-related needs and housing availability. Examples of housing accommodations may include, but are not limited to:

  • accessible room assignments,
  • single-room consideration,
  • access-related modifications,
  • dietary or kitchen-related access needs, and
  • approval for an Emotional Support Animal (ESA).

Approval of a housing accommodation in one semester or setting does not guarantee approval in future semesters or housing placements.

Housing Accommodation Determinations

The University evaluates housing accommodation requests through an individualized assessment process that considers:

  • disability-related need,
  • available housing options,
  • health and safety considerations,
  • impact on the residential community, and
  • reasonableness of the request within the University housing environment.

The University reserves the right to deny or modify requests that:

  • do not establish a disability-related need,
  • fundamentally alter University housing operations,
  • create an undue administrative or financial burden, or
  • pose a direct threat to the health or safety of others.

Student Responsibilities

Students approved for housing accommodations are responsible for complying with all University housing policies, community standards, and Residential Life expectations.

Students are expected to communicate promptly with ADS regarding changes in disability-related needs, housing status, or concerns related to approved accommodations.
